Idiom's Part One

A cut above

Meaning: Somebody or something superior to somebody or something.

Example: The diamond is a cut above the rest.

A dog’ life

Meaning: A wretched existence.

Example: The homeless family is living a dog’s life.

A done deal

Meaning: Something that has already been settled or finalized.

Example: The contract with the company is a done deal.

Feather in somebody’s cap

Meaning: An act or achievement that gives somebody cause to be proud.

Example: Being asked to be the guest of honor is a feather in my cup.

A labor of love

Meaning: Something demanding or difficult that is done just for pleasure rather that for money.

Example: Caring for the autistic children is a labor of love.

A leap in the dark

Meaning: An action taken without knowing what the outcome or consequences will be.

Examples: His decision to go to Iraq is a leap in the dark.

A man of his word

Meaning: Somebody who keeps his promise

Examples: I have always trusted my father because he is a man of his word.

A mouth to feed

Meaning: Somebody who must be provided for, especially fed.

Example: John’s wife had given birth to an other son. He has another mouth to feed.

At first sight

Meaning: On seeing something or somebody for the first time.

Example: Paula knew all along that JM loves her at first sight.

A stab in the back

Meaning: a betrayal or act of treachery.

Example: Krissy could not believe that her best friend could stab her in the back.

A walking encyclopedia

Meaning: Somebody who is very knowledgeable.

Example: Ernie Baron is considered to be a walking encyclopedia.
